“I feel privileged to have the opportunity to provide a testimonial for David and Southern Star Coaches … I have had the pleasure of dealing with them as the social secretary for our Village and organising eight or nine day tours per year, together with my wife and I being guests on a number of extended tours offered by them. On all of the extended tours we have been on we have been provided with excellent accommodation and meals, with fantastic destinations and attractions.”

Within 20 years of the City of Melbourne being settled the discovery of gold, and the quantity of gold discovered made Melbourne the richest city in the world … our tour will see us visit those parts of Victoria that played a substantial role in that achievement.
Before making our way in to the heart of gold country we make a stop at the historic town of Echuca and visit the Port of Echuca, it was the largest inland port in Australia in the late 1800’s.
We have two nights at each of Victoria’s largest gold producing regions, Bendigo and then Ballarat … in Bendigo we will visit the Central Deborah Mine, located in the centre of town the mine is still a working mine today. The Golden Dragon Museum will provide us with the story of the contribution the Chinese have had from the Gold Rush of the 1850’s to present day.
Ballarat is next on our list, Victoria’s third largest city it too has an immense Gold Rush history, with gold being found at Poverty Point through to the uprising of the Eureka Stockade in 1854, said to be one of the most defining moments in Australia’s history. No stay in Ballarat would be complete without a visit to Sovereign Hill during the day, and then again at night to witness the amazing lightshow.

Home to the rare and elusive black opal, Lightning Ridge is a unique and historic opal mining town. We will marvel at extraordinary gems in opal stores, and experience the atmosphere of an underground mine at Opal Mine Adventure.
Lighting Ridge has plenty of eccentricity, not the type that one needs to be wary of but the kind that truly envelopes any visitor and is delivered via characters that could be included in any folkloric Australian novel or film; truly warming and welcoming.
Lightning Ridge is a town full of vibrancy with plenty of experiences on offer for the visitor.

Founded on the banks of the Macquarie River, this vibrant regional centre in the Central Tablelands of NSW has something for everyone. Bathurst is the oldest inland city in Australia, it is rich with history and gold rush heritage, and is considered the spiritual home of motorsports in Australia. Travelling out of Sydney through the gorgeous Blue Mountains we will make Bathurst our home for the next three nights …
Day two we will venture to Oberon, the isolated township is located on a plateau 1113m above sea level and takes its name from the King of the Fairies in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. The area is well known for its gardens and today we visit Mayfield Garden, one of the largest privately owned cool climate gardens in the world. Nestled within a 5000 acre working farm, initial works on the garden were quite modest in scale but as tends to happen with gardens, it grew….and grew…and grew. The gardens have many unique features in the Water Garden, which boasts the Blue Stone Bridge, Copper Tree Fountain and grand 16m high Obelisk.
Our tour will also see us visit Lithgow on our way home …

Really could there be any more moving or memorable time to visit Canberra than ANZAC Day … we depart Sydney for the leisurely drive to Canberra arriving in time for lunch before we visit Cockington Green Gardens. Our days in Canberra will also include a cruise on Lake Burley Griffin, a visit to the National Portrait Museum, the National Museum of Australia, the Royal Mint, and of course the Australian War Memorial.
Every year on the 25th of April, hundreds of thousands of Australians and New Zealanders around the world gather at dawn on Anzac Day. Anzac Day is a time for the community to come together to remember and recognise the service and sacrifice of members of the Australian Defence Force. Originally a commemoration of the landing of Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli in modern-day Turkey in 1915, Anzac Day is a public expression of gratitude and reflection which resonates to the present day.
“We will remember them” as we join this very special ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the National War Museum, our day of remembrance will continue after we have breakfast back in our hotel and before we head back to the ANZAC Parade and National Ceremony.
This very special tour is a definite ‘must do once’ tour …

Located around 270 kilometres to the north-west of Sydney the areas of Mudgee, Gulgong and Hill End exude country charm and provide travellers a chance to reset their senses offering the best of both worlds with quaint central townships and picturesque country landscapes. The township of Mudgee was designed by Robert Hoddle, famed for designing the city of Melbourne … the broad wide streets abound with many fine old stately buildings from the last century, many of which are now classified by the National Trust.
In contrast the township of Gulgong is a step back in time with its original and narrow bent streets and high footpaths. Gulgong was founded in the gold rush era when it was estimated more than 20,000 people flocked to the area. The streetscape and heritage buildings haven’t changed much since the late 1800’s many complete with the original verandahs and iron-lace balconies … one such gem is The Prince of Wales Opera House, it is the oldest performing arts venue still being used for its original intention in Australia, and whose history boasts a performance by Dame Nellie Melba.
Hill End also owes its existence to the gold rush of the 1850’s it is now home to a small eclectic community and where visitors can explore the town through its museums, arts community and more … the world’s largest gold specimen, the ‘Holtermann Nugget’ was found in Hill End in 1872. The famous nugget was a 630lb rock containing more than 75% gold. Our journey home will see us travel through the Upper Hunter Valley with a visit to Singleton. (Image courtesy Tourism Australia)

This tour certainly has a bit of everything for everybody … arriving in Tamworth in the afternoon, this town famous for all things country music will be our home for the next 4 nights. The New England district is as pretty as picture this time of the year with trees ablaze in red, yellow and orange, Autumn is the perfect time to visit. Whilst in Tamworth it would be remiss if we didn’t visit the Walk a Country Mile and the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Big Golden Guitar Centre, home to the National Guitar Museum.
But this tour is not just about country music, we visit Werris Creek, said to be Australia’s first railway town, with a tour of the Australian Railway Monument & Railways Journey Museum. We will visit Walcha, New England’s oldest town and enjoy an indulgent high tea at Langford Homestead. This grand homestead was built in 1903 consists of 22 rooms, a 5 storey central tower, and is on the original site of explorer John Oxley’s campsite. We might not be heading to the ‘back of Bourke’ but we’ll certainly be heading in to outback NSW and on to the township of Bourke. Once a major 19th century river port and trading post, Bourke is an inviting outback town on the banks of the Darling River. Bourke is well noted for its historic landmarks, such as the blacksmith’s workshop from the Cobb & Co stagecoach days, Carrier’s Arms Hotel and Bourke Courthouse where bushranger Captain Starlight was charged after his capture in 1868.
And even though we are not at the back of Bourke we will visit the Back O’ Bourke Exhibition Centre, where we hear tales of early exploration and the paddleboat trade, and learn about the Aboriginal people of the region, farmers, stockmen, bush poets, bushrangers and Afghan cameleers. Legendary Australian poet Henry Lawson lived in Bourke in the 1890s.

This really will be a tour to remember … heading west in to the outback it doesn’t get much more iconic than a couple of nights in Broken Hill. This famous and fascinating mining town in remote western New South Wales sits beyond the Darling River and is full of legendary mining town tales. Dominating Broken Hill is the “Line of Lode” – the seven kilometre strip of what was the largest deposit of silver, lead and zinc in the world ... and on the lighter side, is home to the famous production of Priscilla, Queen of the Dessert
Continuing west our adventure takes us to The Flinders Ranges, the largest mountain range in South Australia and are world-renowned for their geological and European history, together with its stunning scenery. The Wilpena Pound Resort will be our home whilst we stay in the Ranges, and it is the site of its name sake, Wilpena Pound, a large and naturally shaped amphitheater covering nearly 80 square kilometres. Within the Park are special gorges, cool waterholes and towering peaks. With so many highlights including Parachilna, Quorn, the Pichi Richi Railway, the colours, the vastness, the stories and the wildlife we are sure you’ll agree this is indeed a special place, and a ‘must see’ trip of a lifetime.

As summed up by one travel writer “a cruise on Murray Princess is a fun and enjoyable experience; for many people who go, it’s undoubtedly a “bucket list” trip. If you enjoy relaxed cruising, community spirit, exploring quaint townships and seeing plenty of wildlife, it is one to put on the list.”
The PS Murray Princess is a true inland paddlewheeler built for the Murray River, with a character and charm of yesteryear. It is the largest inland paddlewheeler in the southern hemisphere. Catering for just 120 passengers, she brings the unique advantages of small ship cruising to the remarkable setting of Australia’s outback. The PS Murray Princess cruises between Mannum, Murray Bridge and Salter’s Station along the Murray River. Our 4 night cruise takes us north on the great Murray River from the historic river port of Mannum to Blanchetown. We will follow in the wake of great Australian pioneers along the outback river highway, experiencing the magic, majestic, and spectacular scenery from towering cliffs to expansive farmlands. Along the way, we’ll see a great variety of Australian wildlife, including kangaroos and many of the 350 bird species that inhabit the riverlands. Highlights include a visit to Salter’s Station vineyard for a wine tasting at the cellar door, visit a typical Australian farm, woolshed and wildlife shelter, enjoy an Aussie barbecue beside the river and visit Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve, an aboriginal archaeological site. This absolutely wonderful tour will also see us visit Wagga Wagga, Swan Hill and Hay as we make our way to and from Sydney … book now, and tick this one off the bucket list. No better, or prettier time for a quick jaunt down the highway to visit Canberra than in the Spring when the city bursts with the colours of Floriade. The idea of Floriade was that of Christiaan Slotemaker de Bruine who was a landscape architect for the government, and wanted to do something magnificent to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Canberra in 1988.
The Floriade display is the largest of its type in the Southern Hemisphere with over 150,000 annuals including 65,000 tulips and 20,000 daffodils. No trip to Canberra would be complete without a visit to the National Portrait Gallery and the Australian War Memorial for the Last Post Ceremony. To cap off this amazing tour we also partake in a truly unique and exclusive experience with a guided tour of the gardens of Government House.

The Riverina really is one of the nation’s most picturesque regions with much to offer everyone, it is home to the Murrumbidgee River and its waterways. The River and its waterways make their way through an array of charming towns and natural wonders, all just waiting to be explored. Sitting in the heart of Australia’s food bowl there are so many treats from wines and fruits, to the artisan delights of locally made chocolate, liquorice and cheeses.
Did you know that the Riverina is home to the world famous Chiko Roll, the birth place of the Kelpie, the Elvis capital of Australia, and there’s a memorial where a dog sits on a tuckerbox waiting for its master … and did we mention how they love their racing in the Riverina, whether it’s horse racing, greyhounds, camels, sheep or even yabbies.
We would need more than just our five days to explore all of the Riverina but we will take in fantastic places and sights such as Leeton, where we will do a ‘taste of Leeton tour’, Junee, and its famous liquorice and chocolate factory. We also visit Griffith, and the Citrus Sculptures, more than 70 larger than life citrus tree sculptures that line the main street of Griffith. (Image courtesy Tourism Australia)

Every now and then there are places you visit that remind you that life – and the world – are beautiful. In mid-October through to early November the streets and parks of Grafton, set in NSW Northern rivers area, are transformed into something that resembles a dream as the Jacaranda trees explode in all their purple glory providing you that sense of wonder.
The Jacaranda season is surprisingly brief, which only makes the experience more memorable. The trees generally start to blossom in mid-October and by the first week of November (when we are visiting) the streets and footpaths are carpeted in fallen purple blossom. For anyone who may be a little sceptical on making the voyage to Grafton, this isn’t just a ‘oh yeah, there’s a couple of flowering trees, it is street after street, pathway after pathway, and parkland after parkland chock-a-block with these beautiful flowering trees. It’s one of those visits that will undoubtedly keep you coming back year after year. It’s a trip filled with beautiful memories, all made even more special due to the relatively short time frame that the Jacaranda trees bloom. (Image courtesy Destination NSW)

Described by the locals as “the best place on earth” the tiny island of Norfolk Island in the South Pacific is defined by its pine trees, jagged cliffs and rich history. With its World Heritage listed buildings, sublime scenery, unique culture and intriguing past make Norfolk Island one of Australia’s most fascinating destinations. Settled by descendents of mutineers who speak a mix of Tahitian and 18th century English, it’s a friendly place where waving to everyone you pass is mandatory, cows have right of way and everyone knows everyone else. December, and Christmas … this tour will have us enjoy everything about Christmas before Christmas … starting with a Christmas Crackers Lunch on the first day of our tour, through to the awe inspiring display of Christmas lights at the Hunter Valley Gardens, and a Christmas lunch cruise on the day we return to Sydney.
The highlight of this tour though will be the Christmas Lights Spectacular held at the Hunter Valley Gardens … the Spectacular is the Southern hemispheres largest lights display and will bring the joy and magic of Christmas to us all. The Gardens will dazzle us with stunning lights like we’ve never seen before … with over 1.5 million Christmas lights on show there are enough lights to cover a football field. There are a series of recently created immersive displays including the White Christmas scene, Lover’s Corner, and new light tunnels. With over 19 kilometres of string lighting be thankful we are not the ones who have to unroll it each year …
Our tour to the Hunter Valley will also see us enjoy the magic of the Gardens during the day … spread across 14 hectares and encompassing 10 internationally themed gardens there are over 6,000 trees, 600,000 shrubs and 1 million ground covers to explore ensuring there is something for everyone. This would have to be one of the happiest tours you could do to welcome in the Christmas spirit.
Includes: 3 night’s accommodation, 3 dinners, 3 cooked breakfasts, 3 lunches, morning teas from the coach, luxury coach travel, fully escorted with driver and hostess, all entries as per itinerary

December in Young is cherry time – Young is the largest cherry growing area in the Southern Hemisphere and producers over 75% of all Australian grown cherries. Of course we will visit one of the many cherry farms located in the area where we can pick our own, or purchase some ready picked cherries.
Our tour to Young will also see us venture out to the townships of Cowra, home of the famous ‘Cowra breakout’ where we will also visit the internationally renowned Japanese Gardens. We will spend a day visiting Temora and Cootamundra … Cootamundra is a picturesque country town in the beautiful Riverina, best known for being the birthplace of famous cricketer Sir Donald Bradman. We will visit Junee, a railway museum, heritage streetscapes and chocolate tours are just three of the delights to discover in Junee. Our curiosity will be stirred and our tastebuds tempted in this pretty country town before making our way back to Sydney.

Celebrate the coming of the new year in the beautiful ‘city of churches’ Adelaide … we will arrive in Adelaide the day before New Year’s Eve ensuring we are well rested the next day for our NYE dinner in our specially reserved seats in a restaurant right on the Torrens River. We will have prime position to view the spectacular 9.00pm fireworks on the river and over the city skyline. Adelaide and the surrounds have so much to offer and our tour will include a guided tour of Adelaide taking in such places Montefoire Hill, and Adelaide’s most visited tourist attraction, the Adelaide Central Market.
We will also visit the bayside suburb of Glenelg with its long sandy beaches and alfresco inspired lifestyle before making our way to Port Adelaide for a lunchtime cruise. No visit to Adelaide would be complete without a trip up the highway to the majestic Barossa Valley ... we will visit the Whispering Wall, a curved retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir it provides a unique ‘acoustic experience’ the heritage town of Tanunda and the historic, family-owned winery of Seppelsfield Wines.
To add to this already fantastic tour we will visit Echuca, enjoy lunch on board a Murray River paddlesteamer and an overnight stay in Albury. On our final day we make our way home to Sydney with a stop in Gundagai and lunch in Yass.
